~ 'Atoms' for August ~
Friends, I wanted to show you the beginning array of my beautiful, plant/corm acquisition - Gladiolus nanus - Atom Hardy Gladiolus (Sword-Lily) which is adding to the lovely attire in my garden areas.
Stunning, dusty orange-red 3-petalled velvety flowers display silvery-white embroidered embellishments on their edges! What a delight to grow and see again this year!
What a wonderful way to open the month of August with pizzaz!
I had wanted to grow these beauties for several years so I was very excited when they arrived in the spring of 2021 along with the rest of my Veseys order. Last year was terrific and now after a variable mix of sun and rain so far in 2022, they are really showing their beauty once more! 💖
Just a little history note on this astounding corm - Atom was presented to the world in 1946, about the time when things 'atomic' seemed to be of great interest. Its name, meaning 'diminutive' does not describe the bloom, but the height as this nanus hybrid grows only up to 3 feet tall.
An excellent choice for pots, rock or wild garden displays! I have them in all three! It is quite hardy and can even winter over in the ground and bloom the next spring if mulched adequately.
Atoms like it hot so a full sun location is best. Light, evenly moist soil which drains well is also best and it must be kept well-watered.
Atom's bloom time is mid-summer to early fall - I stagger-plant mine from the last frost date to the start of summer to have this occur.

As I finish this Joy Journal Jotting, just a final historical note on gladiolus. They have quite a history, with many old species coming from Africa and Asia. Due to this fact, many believe the mention of lilies of the field in the Bible is the earliest written reference to the gladiolus.
